Same first AND last name couple file for divorce after world-famous storybook romance three years later

They may share the same name, but apparently that is the only thing that Kelly and Kelly Hildebrandt had in common. The namesake wife and husband have decided to call a quits only three years after tying the knot much to the joy of media outlets around the world.

“How do they term it at the courthouse? Irreconcilable differences, that is what I would say,” Mr Hildebrandt told NBC 6 Friday. “We gave it our best shot.”

Fleeting fame: The happy couple appeared on the Today Show and other programs to talk about their unusual romance

The couple appeared on the Today Show and other programs to talk about their unusual romance.

Not long after the couple filed for divorce in March, the husband Kelly returned to his hometown of Lubbock, Texas, where his tree service is located. ‘She’s a Florida girl, and I’m a Texas guy,’ he said. ‘We really did come from pretty different worlds.’ Mr Hildebrandt went to South Florida just this week to meet with his former wife for the first time since the split, saying that there were ‘no hard feelings’ between the two.

The Kellys’ crazy romance for the digital age took the world by storm in 2009. It all started in February of that year, the female Kelly stumbled upon the Facebook profile of her future husband. She was fascinated to discover that they shared both the first and last name, and sent off a friendly message to note the awesome coincidence.

After just three weeks of phone and online conversations, Mr. Hildebrandt at 24 years old, flew down to meet his 20 year old female counterpart in South Florida. The two instantly fell head-over-heels for each other.

A few months later, Ms. Kelly, much to her surprise, found a diamond engagement ring hidden in a treasure box planted on the beach earlier by Mr. Hildebrandt himself.

“He is just everything that I’ve ever looked for,” the female Kelly said of her fiancé at the time. ‘There have always been certain qualities that a guy has to have. And he has all the ones I could think of – and more.’

NBC6 broke the news of the quirky couple with the exact same name in July of 2009, catapulting the two lovebirds to international fame. What followed next were a series of appearances on national TV, from the Today Show to Inside Edition and Fox News.

In October, the two Kellys wed at Lighthouse Point in front of 100 or so guests. A picture of their nuptials made it into People Magazine. But unfortunately, what started out as a fairy tale marriage, did not survive its time away from the spotlight.

Good friends: Mr Hildebrandt said there are no hard feelings between himself and his estranged spouse, and she even let him keep his dog

Although Mrs. Kelly refused to publicly address the split, her mother released a statement saying: ‘Yes, I am sorry to say they have separated. I am happy to say they have remained good friends and are both doing well.’

Mr. Hildebrandt, thinking ahead, said he would be very reluctant to marry anyone sharing his name again so as not to become food for the media.
