Mel Gibson is preparing his next projects both behind and in front of the camera.

Gibson’s next directorial feature will be Destroyer, which tells the real-life story of the USS Laffey, which defended itself against 22 kamikaze attacks during World War II. The film is based on the nonfiction book by John Wukovits, Hell From the Heavens: The Epic Story of the USS Laffey and World War II’s Greatest Kamikaze Attack. The screenplay was written by Rosalind Ross, Gibson’s girlfriend.

His last directing effort, Hacksaw Ridge, also told a story about WWII. Gibson received an Oscar nomination for best director for the film.

Warner Bros. is also trying to sign him onto its adaptation of The Six Billion Dollar Man, according to The Hollywood Reporter. As previously reported, The Six Billion Dollar Man already has Mark Wahlberg attached to star.

Gibson and Wahlberg starred in last year’s Daddy’s Home 2. Wahlberg is reportedly pushing for Gibson to be cast alongside him.

The Six Billion Dollar Man is a big-screen adaptation of the hit 1970s television show, The Six Million Dollar Man. Wahlberg will play military officer Steve Austin whose bionic implants give him superhuman strength. Austin is employed as a secret agent for the fictional government agency, the OSI.

No release dates have been set for either of these projects.
